Dr. Julio Montaner
BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS
This week’s Conversation that Matters features Dr. Julio Montaner of the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS on treatment as a cure.
Dr. Montaner points out that British Columbia was the first jurisdiction in the world that would make HIV/AIDS treatment free. He also details how the drug combination known as the cocktail was developed in BC and lead to a treatment as a prevention strategy that has since been adopted by the World Health Organization and numerous governments and the Clinton Foundation.
Despite the success of the HAART or highly active antiretroviral therapy the Government of Canada has not adopted the protocol.

This week’s Conversation that Matters features Vancouver Police Chief Jim Chu on Mental Health, Addiction and Homelessness.
The Chief points out that no one wants to see people with mental health challenges fall through the cracks in the system and end up on the streets. He points out, however, that it continues to happen and when it does, he says, “who’s there to meet them? Your friendly neighbourhood drug dealer who immediately victimizes them.”
Chief Chu estimates there are 300 people with identifiable mental health issues on the Downtown Eastside that need help. He says, we can pay for those services or wait and hope they do not become a safety risk to the public and ultimately a justice system cost.

This week’s Conversation that Matters, features Colleen Hardwick, CEO of Place Speak, a company that is addressing an issue front and centre in the Vancouver Civic Election. Namely, is City Hall listening to real people who can be verified?
Hardwick was sick and tired of governments hiding behind the internet firewall saying they didn’t know who was a real person and where they lived. Place Speak sprang to life to solve those issues and to provide voters with an opportunity to be heard and an opportunity to engage in shaping the future of the place they call home. Cities all over North America are embracing the idea - Vancouver isn’t one of them.
